Is David Cameron a poodle to the US?

David Cameron has received significant criticism in the UK press this morning, much of it totally unwarranted, due to his diplomatic statement regarding the ongoing onslaught against BP led by Pres. Obama. However, despite the fact that business leaders are today demanding that David Cameron stands up to be counted, and support UK businesses, he is still taking a softly softly diplomatic approach. But what can we expect?

David Cameron has only been in the job for a few weeks and has yet to meet up with his US counterpart face-to-face. Rather than become involved in and unseemly spat in public it seems that David Cameron will air his concerns during a private phone call with Pres. Obama at the weekend. The truth is that the US president has been pushed into a corner by the US media with the midterm elections just around the corner. With his personal rating amongst US voters at a record low he needs to be seen to be defending the US and deflecting any potential criticism of the US authorities elsewhere.

However, it will be interesting to see how the relationship between David Cameron and Pres. Obama develops over the months and years ahead.
