Unite union calls off strike ballot

In a sign of the times it was revealed today that the Unite union has called off the forthcoming ballot for a third round of industrial action against British Airways. This comes only hours after British Airways tabled a new proposal for the Unite union to consider which many hope will see the end of this disastrous and highly destructive period of industrial action. So are both sides willing to compromise?

The very fact that the union has called off the strike ballot for the third round of industrial action is a positive sign and something which will be welcomed by British Airways. However, over the last few months we have been on the verge of an agreement between the two parties only for these to fall by the wayside because of seemingly differences in the "small print". Hopefully both parties will now appreciate the need to bring to an end this dispute which has cost British Airways hundreds of millions of pounds and tarnished the reputation of the company. It has also put at risk future investment and future jobs for union members so in reality there are very few winners.

Even if this British Airways dispute is coming to an end there are concerns that unions are looking to flex their muscles in the short to medium term elsewhere.
