Are we in for a winter of discontent?
There are serious concerns that union activity over the coming months could bring the UK to a standstill as union leaders fight for the jobs of their members under severe threat because of public-sector spending cuts. Despite the fact that behind closed doors many union leaders fully understand the need to rein in public spending, in public the dispute between the UK government and the unions is set to grow.
The unions have so far been reluctant to compare the situation with the infamous winter of discontent although there is no doubt we are heading down the same type of path. Bins overflowing, cemeteries closed and other vital public services were decimated during the winter of discontent with no winners. Whether the unions will be able to mobilize sufficient numbers to cause the same amount of disruption as the winter of discontent is open to debate but there's no doubt that a premeditated plan of action is underway and David Cameron will need to be very wary in the short to medium term.
If the unions are able to gain public support for their activities there is every chance there could be massive difficulties ahead for local authorities and government. What can David Cameron do to stop this union train?
