Is Sainsbury's the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK?

UK supermarket giant Sainsbury's has released data for the second quarter of the company's financial year showing that like for like sales were up 2.9% in the second quarter of 2010 against 1.1% in the first quarter. Indeed the company also confirmed that non-food sales are growing at a rate which is three times faster than the core grocery division. So what does this mean for Sainsbury's?

Justin King, the chief executive of Sainsbury's, was very vocal in his congratulations to Sainsbury's staff as the company has easily outgunned the rest of the "big four". This comes at a time when the UK supermarket industry is under pressure and indeed food inflation is impacting upon the spending patterns and the ability to spend of UK consumers. It will be interesting to see how the rest of 2010 pans out for Sainsbury's compared to the rest of the sector but there is no doubt the company has been the star performer of recent times.

The Sainsbury's that we see today is very different to that of 20 years ago or even 10 years ago as the company has had to adapt to a changing environment and the "new kids on the block". Whether this new found success will continue remains to be seen.
