UK jobless situation amongst worst in Europe
A report by the Centre for Policy Studies has found that one in eight adults in the UK lives in jobless household. The study also found that many adults in the UK have been unemployed for a number of years with the welfare state the only source of income for many people. This report has backed up the UK government's plans to revamp the welfare state system and basically make it more lucrative for individuals to gain employment as opposed to living off the state.
While there is no doubt that the number of people dependent upon the welfare state has increased dramatically over the last 10 or 20 years there is also no doubt that many people have been pushed into this situation through no fault of their own. If you have a family, children and bills to pay and you find that going back to work means a reduction in your income, what would you do?
The introduction of the minimum wage has assisted many in the UK although in relative terms the minimum wage hourly payment is still very low. Quite how the government will attack the welfare state remains to be seen but changes are afoot.
