Cyber defences to receive £500 million boost

It is understood that the UK government and security forces believe that computer hackers now pose more of a problem to UK defences than many of the more traditional foes. As a consequence while many departments in the government will find out by how much their budgets will be reduced by in the medium term, an additional £500 million will be accredited to the development of cyber defences in the UK.

While there is no doubt that cyber threats have increased dramatically over the last few years, in line with terrorism, many people will be surprised to learn of a potential £500 million windfall. However, the truth is that if the UK government, major UK businesses and perhaps the UK stock market were to fall under the threat of cyber hackers then this would have a massive impact upon everyday life, the UK economy and investment in UK.

The authorities could sit back and invest more money and more time into cyber defences in the future but ultimately they are being proactive rather than reactive at this point in time. Only time will tell whether the £500 million investment, which is rumoured to be on the cards this week, will pay dividends in the long term.
