Boots to cut 700 UK jobs
08/06/2015
Boots, the high street chemist, has announced that it will be cutting 700 jobs from its UK based offices.
The announcement of restructure comes after the chemists recent merger with US chemist giant Walgreens last year, when the American company acquired a 45% stake in Boots. The jobs that are set to be cut will be non-store based roles and affect only Boots' UK-based offices.
The cuts are expected to be made through natural attrition, redeployment, retraining and redundancy. In April, Walgreens announced it planned to make $1.5bn in cost savings by the end of 2017, up from an earlier estimate of $1bn.
Boots has 2,511 stores in the UK and employs about 70,000 people.
Company president Simon Roberts said:
"Together with my leadership team, I believe this plan will make Boots even better for our customers and drive sustainable future growth.
"We also remain fully committed to our presence in Nottingham, which has been the home of Boots since the very beginning.
"We have not taken these decisions lightly, and understand the impact that today's announcement may have on our colleagues.
"We are fully committed to doing everything we can to support all our people as we transform Boots and strive to be even better for our customers and patients."
