Tuesday 16th June 2009
A technical fault at Barclays has caused significant problems for the bank's customers today leaving many unable to access their funds. Internet banking, telephone banking and a whole variety of cash machines were "down" this afternoon due to a hardware failure. While the situation has been resolved and the system is now fully functional many people were left stranded in shops unable to use their debit cards. This is something of a rarity for Barclays bank which has an excellent track record in the UK with regards to system security and system reliability. However, it does highlight the UK consumer's dependence upon Internet banking, telephone banking and cash machines. The good old fashioned Barclays bank branch has now disappeared in many areas of the UK leaving customers literally stranded with no money. Thankfully the bank has reiterated the fact that no customer will lose out financially because of the hardware crash and any relevant fees will be reimbursed as soon as possible. Initially the problem seemed to emanate from the south of England but very soon it became a nationwide issue and seems to have impacted the full 3,500 Barclays cash machines nationwide. No details have been released with regards to the exact issues but customers are just thankful they are able to access their funds tonight.
