Has the UK government made the wildcat strike situation worse?
Despite attempts to dampen down the threat of more wildcat strikes this week it appears as though the UK government has stoked the fires of this employment dispute even more with their recent comments. Lord Mandelson in particular seems to have offended the union leaders and employees throughout the UK with his suggestion that UK employers "can go and work in Europe if they want to" although Gordon Brown's lack of compassion for the issue has also caught the eye of many.
At this moment in time it is unclear how the situation can be resolved with the UK government suggesting it would be illegal to make the changes that the unions are demanding, which leaves UK workers in a very difficult situation. Many are querying why the UK appears to be a magnet for overseas workers when only a small fraction of UK workers are employed in similar situations overseas. There is a sneaking suspicion that the NHS and the UK benefits system, to which all EU residents in the UK are entitled, is the main reason for this substantial increase in the popularity of the UK.
Unless this situation is nipped in the bud as soon as possible there could be dire consequences for the UK government.
