Beware the insurance pitfalls when travelling abroad
A report by InsureandGo has highlighted significant problems in the UK travel market with many services added to the cost of your travel which ultimately you may not require. The survey revealed that around 60% of holiday companies in the UK routinely add cancellation cover to the cost of their packages even though many people may not actually require this.
It was also revealed that regular travel insurance is often added to a package and while often very useful, the sums charged are often in excess of regular travel insurance you can obtain yourself. Indeed many people in the UK will already have travel insurance via their banking arrangements, so it is definitely worth checking what cover you need and what cover you already have.
Those who read the site a regular basis would be aware that Ryanair was recently criticised by the EU commission as it required customers to opt out of additional services rather than opt in. The situation being described in the UK holiday sector is very similar with many holiday companies also requiring customers to opt out of additional services rather than opt in. Even though the Internet has opened up many new avenues for those looking at travelling overseas it is imperative that you check the small print and know exactly what you are buying.
