Future of Food Standards Agency in doubt

The future of the Food Standards Agency is today in doubt with the shock revelation that the agency is unaware of how many cloned cattle are in the UK and indeed how many have now entered the food chain. The revelation just a few days ago that one dairy farmer admitted that milk from a cloned cow had entered the UK food chain has now grown into a potential disaster for the Food Standards Agency. So what are the latest revelations?

Despite the fact that it is illegal for meat or produce from cloned animals to enter the UK food chain, it is now understood that not only is there milk from cloned cows in the system but meat from cloned cattle has also been allowed into the system. Indeed, one dairy farmer in Scotland claims that his herd of 96 dairy cows originated from two cloned offspring bulls.

The farmers dragged into the uproar over cloned animals and their entry into the UK food chain have accused the Food Standards Agency of leaving them "high and dry" with alleged variable advice about what can and cannot be done with cloned animals. This is a major problem for the UK government and one which could actually see the end of the Food Standards Agency in future cost-cutting exercises.
