Most car insurance companies accepting dashcam footage
07/05/2015
The majority of UK car insurance companies are now accepting dashcam footage as evidence in disputed claims.
Dashcams are small cameras that are placed on the driver’s dashboard or windscreen in order to film what is happening on the road ahead of them.
Research by Nextbase found that 29 UK car insurance providers would be willing to use dashcam footage as evidence in a disputed claim.
However, whilst footage of an accident can be invaluable evidence in a dispute, experts have stressed that drivers shouldn’t rely on the technology alone.
It was claimed that in the event of an accident, a driver should always collect as much evidence as possible, such as eye witness details. This is because the footage will be considered against all other evidence that is provided.
Premiums
Despite this willingness to use the technology as evidence, only a handful of insurers are willing to offer a discount on premiums to those who use one.
Some insurance providers offer to fit their customers cars with a ‘black box’ that records evidence around a persons driving habits, such as whether or not they stick to speed limits. If they agree to have this fitted into their car, the insurance provider often offers a discounted premium.
Malcolm Tarling, of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that it is unlikely that many insurers will offer discounts for dashcam users in the future too.
He added that if a dashcam clause was included in a policy, insurers would also have to include a clause that would force the driver to release footage in the event of it revealing themselves as the cause of an accident.
