Gordon Brown under pressure regarding use of Labour Party funds
Former Labour Party general secretary Peter Watt has today revealed the use of Labour Party funds by Gordon Brown during his tenure at the Treasury. While there is no suggestion whatsoever of lawbreaking or illegal practice, the former Labour Party general secretary has questioned what the funds were used for as there appears to be little in the way of records available.
It seems very strange that Peter Watt has chosen the run-up to a general election to air these comments which will attract negative headlines for Gordon Brown in the days ahead. It would appear that funds in the region of £50,000 were allocated to polling research by the Labour Party under the instruction of Gordon Brown. However, there is no record as to how the funds were used and exactly what information was gleaned from the polling research.
At a time when MPs in the UK are under more and more scrutiny regarding their finances and their expenses it seems almost political suicide that these allegations regarding Gordon Brown have appeared in the press. The Conservative party is almost certain to make political headway with these comments and even if no laws or Parliamentary rules have been broken it is a grey area which needs clarification.
