Bad spending habits and budgeting tips- travel

10/08/2015

In the UK, people travel on average over 6,500 miles per year. Rail journeys have more than doubled in the last 10 years, and the proportion or weekly spending on public transport in 2011 hit 14%, which is a massive chunk of our income.

We all have bad spending habits. When it comes to travel, there may be a few traps that you have fallen into yourself, such as:

Bad spending habit one- paying full price for train tickets

Train tickets in the UK can be really expensive, but there are different ways that you can work around this.
The cheapest prices for train tickets are usually released about 12 weeks before the travel date, so if you are planning for a trip, make sure you check and book your tickets online 3 months before. Even booking tickets 24 hours before you travel can save you money, so as soon as you know when and where you are going, have a look and try to get your tickets cheaper online.

There is also another way to get tickets for long journeys much cheaper than they first look. When buying your tickets in advance, see if you can “split” them. Instead of buying tickets for your whole journey, buy separate tickets for consistent parts of the journey (on the same train). It may take a little bit of research, but can save you a substantial amount of money- hundreds sometimes.

If you are either under 25, travel often with a partner, travel often with your family, aged over 60 or are disabled, you can buy a rail card for £30. You can then get a third of all off-peak travel. If you spend £90 on train tickets over the year, even just on one journey, you will end up saving money with a rail card.

Bad spending habit two- not taking advantage of season tickets

Do you commute to work via public transport? If you buy your tickets weekly, you could save yourself a lot of money by getting a season ticket. Some workplace even run schemes where they buy employees an annual travel ticket and take a monthly payment towards it out of your wage. Buses, trains and trams usually offer annual tickets, pop into your local travel centre and check it out.
If you can’t afford to pay a hefty one off payment for an annual travel pass, do the maths and work out if it would be cheaper for you to buy your ticket each month, on payday.

Bad spending habit three- not driving economically

Simply changing the way you drive can mean you could go up to 33% further on a full tank of fuel. Think of how much money this could save you in the long run! The best tips to follow, courtesy of the AA, are:

• Don’t stop and start aggressively, but instead try to smooth out your acceleration and braking
• Don’t over-rev the engine
• Drive in the right gear
• Block shift gears to brake – don’t go to each gear individually
• Don’t drive around with heavy things in the boot
• Keep your tyres at the right pressure
• Don’t drive too fast
• Get the car serviced when it’s due
• Don’t use the air conditioning
• Take the roof rack off

Bad spending habit four- ignoring the coach

When people think of travelling across the country, they usually consider driving or getting the train before anything else. In doing so, they could be missing out on some really amazing savings.

Megabus travels to most of the big cities in the country, and works out so much cheaper than the train. A month in advance, a ticket from Manchester to London can be as little as £5! True, it does take longer than the high speed Virgin trains (The trips lasts about 4 and a half hours) but if you have some time to spare, the savings can be massive.

Nation Express coach service also has some great offers. When booking in advance there are often 2 for 1 deals available, as well as exclusive online deals that can cost as little as £6.

If you are travelling last minute and have not booked any tickets, always be sure to check if a coach would be a cheaper option for you. They are usually quiet, they are not effected by train delays and cancelations and you are always guaranteed a seat!

So, whether you commute to work each and everyday or only really do your traveling at the weekend, there are many different ways you can save money. It is always worth doing your research and taking the time to find the best offer, so you can save your money for future trips!
