How to secure your online banking service

Even though you might see headlines suggesting that online banking is risky, open to hackers and can be unstable the truth is that these accusations apply to literally any internet service. The banks and financial companies can do as much on their side as possible but there is also a role for users to play in securing their service.

Installing simple anti-spyware software, anti-virus software and improving your firewall protection are fairly cheap to carry out and could literally save you from an array of online frauds which are always circulating the internet. You also need to be aware that you will at some stage have received an email suggesting that your online bank account has been hacked and you need to confirm your user name and password. Do not be fooled by these scams!

Upon opening such an email you will be asked to click on a link which often takes you to a site which looks the same as the official bank site. However, very often these sites will upload spyware and key press recorder programs onto your system which will then transmit your key presses - i.e. username and password to the fraudsters. When the fraudsters have your password they will waste no time in clearing out your bank account!

Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm your password in an email with a link - if you have any suspicions contact your bank and let them know what has happened.
