Welsh MPs under pressure regarding expenses
The Daily Telegraph has today issued allegations regarding 50 Welsh MPs and their expenses. The paper claims that government whip Mark Tami and many more MPs have claimed council tax expenses even though it is alleged they have not actually paid the council tax in full. This is yet another nail in the coffin of the UK expenses system which is certain to be severely revamped in the weeks, months and years to come.
As we saw yesterday, the police authorities are taking a greater interest in MP's expenses and where it can be proven that Parliamentary bodies were misled regarding expense cliams there may be further criminal investigations. A number of MPs are said to be under investigation by the authorities with regards to "non-mortgages" for which they claimed expenses. This is just the tip of the iceberg and even though many MPs have come forward to pay back significant amounts of money this will in no way influence whether further criminal investigations are carried out.
Each day brings new and more alarming allegations regarding the expenses system with one MP said to have claimed for a one pence mobile phone call and others said to have claimed back expenses regarding toilet paper and other bizarre items.
