Sir Thomas Legg had concerns about MPs expenses some time
The ex-civil servant Sir Thomas Legg, currently in charge of a review of MPs expenses, was it has been revealed a member of the committee back in 2004 which was created to look at MPs expenses. It has been confirmed that Sir Thomas Legg and other members of the committee had significant concerns about the expenses system as long as five years ago.
This may well explain why Sir Thomas Legg has taken such an "aggressive" stance against MPs expenses which in some quarters is on the verge of leading to a mutiny. Many MPs have received demands to repay thousands of pounds and indeed some are currently the subject of both tax office investigations and police reviews. The situation is set to get worse over the next few weeks as mortgage payments and property transactions come under the spotlight with more potential repayments required for some MPs.
Despite talk of a whispering campaign against Sir Thomas Legg he is continuing full steam ahead in his review of the MPs expenses system and many believe that Gordon Brown will now be regretting appointing him as head of the review.
