Will Tory calls for small business tax cuts be heard?

The Conservative Party has this week continued its new assault on the government's handling of the economy and called for an immediate tax cut for small businesses in the UK which are literally falling like flies as the economic downturn continues. The party has also called for business taxes to be suspended for a short period for those hardest hit to give them more chance of riding out the economic storm. But will the government listen? Will they act?

The problem which the government has is the fact that the Tories are strengthening their position in the so called middle England area of politics, an area vital to Gordon Brown if he has any chance of winning the next election. However, he cannot be seen to endorse Tory tactics and will no doubt be forced to come out with his own rehashed ideas for the small business sector.

The evidence of the last week shows that Gordon Brown's second honeymoon is now well and truly over and while he may be riding a lot higher in the polls of late, next year could be a big turning point again. All the euphoria of the rescue package will be forgotten, unemployment will be up and we are likely to see more and more businesses go under.
