Government advisers suggest reduction in immigration employment
In a move which many will claim has come too late to help the UK economy, official government advisers yesterday recommended that 270,000 employment positions should be taken off the official list which details skills shortages in the UK. The posts of quantity surveyor and construction manager should soon be withdrawn from the list which would reduce the number of jobs covered from 800,000 to 530,000.
While many would say that offering over 500,000 jobs to immigrant workers is a slap in the face for UK workers, it would appear that the list will not be reduced any further in the short to medium term. However, it has emerged that many UK workers are now looking towards positions which were recently targeted by immigrant workers as more and more people in the UK become desperate.
It will be interesting to see how far the UK government is prepared to go with regards to the recommendations from official advisers as, in the past, immigration has been a very tricky and difficult field for the government to navigate. As pressure builds on the UK social security budget it would seem sensible to review the list again to see if more positions could be filled by UK workers.
