Phoenix Four and the UK government witch hunt

The UK government is under attack from the infamous Phoenix Four who have been hung out to dry in the press with regards to the collapse of MG Rover some four years ago. A government report which took four years to produce and £16 million of taxpayer's money would appear to lay the blame fairly and squarely at the door of the Phoenix Four who are accused of unreasonable remuneration packages. However, the role of the UK government and especially Gordon Brown appears to have been whitewashed from the report.

There are accusations that the UK government steadfastly refused to support the company in any financial manner with a comment from the Phoenix Four along the lines of "more money was spent on the report than was offered to the company in financial assistance". While Lord Mandelson has ridiculed the accusation that the UK government had not offered financial assistance, he did suggest that even if a bridging loan were agreed, with the company in bid talks, this would be a waste of money with the group over £1 billion in debt.

The next few days are likely to see more developments on the MG Rover front and the UK government, although on the attack at the moment, is sure to feel the wrath of former MG Rover employees and unions.
