212,000 skilled migrants to enter UK this year

Around 212,000 skilled economic migrants are expected to enter the UK this year, according to new research. A report from the Centre of Economics and Business Research (CEBR) predicts that the majority of the migrants will come from the education, health and government services sector. The report also said that the number of skilled migrants resident in the UK will have risen to 812,000 by 2012. This represents a rise of 97,000 compared with the numbers currently domiciled here. The anticipated growth is expected despite the imminent introduction of a new points system which potential migrants must pass before being admitted. It is hoped that the system will cut numbers of those coming to the UK and will ensure that sectors where there are shortages benefit most of all from the influx. Skilled migrants currently make up around 2.5 per cent of the UK's workforce and bring in £36 billion to the UK's economy annually.
