Brown Tries To Gloss Over Darlings Remarks

Using a keynote speech at the CBI in Scotland we saw Gordon Brown looking more upbeat than he has for some time, more resilient and more candid in his approach to the struggle with the economy. While he has watered down his recent more optimistic tones he said that he was 'cautiously optimistic' that the UK downturn would be short and sharp, followed by a strong bounce. So what else did he have to say?

In direct comparison to his Chancellor, Gordon Brown again grasped the nettle and promised to help the poor (again!) although as has been the trend of late there was very little substance behind the promises. Over the last few days he had been very bullish about securing a rebate for all low income energy customers but rumours from Downing Street seem to suggest that this has now been dropped after losing a power struggle with the large foreign owned energy groups.

Apparently the authorities are now set to announce plans to hep each and every home owner in the UK improve their insulation to save money!

Targeted support seems to be the buzz word at the moment but the targets and the type of support seem to be forever changing.
