Can Gordon Brown really rescue his political future?

The last few months have seen a major change in the strategy of the Labour Party as they begin to jockey for position ahead of an expected election in 2010. Gordon Brown has undergone something of a major transformation which has seen him bring back old faces from past governments, bring back his old enemy and arch rival Lord Mandelson as well as throwing is fiscal golden rules out of the window.

Today's talk of potential tax cuts ahead of the next election is a blatant attempt to bribe the UK public with their own money and while some will take this on face value others will appreciate the underlying reasons for the move. How ironic that Gordon Brown is using taxpayer's money to save his own skin when he has refused point blank to reduce business and personal tax rates throughout his tenure at the Treasury and as PM.

However the leopard seems to be changing his spots now that his original style of government has been found wanting in a serious way. Whether he will be successful with his latest approach to the UK voting public remains to be seen but we certainly seem to be moving back towards the old days of Labour Party spin.
