Old Labour is back and new Labour is dead
This is the common cry amongst opposition politicians at the moment and the press have latched on to the fact that Labour has taken a serious lurch back to the left. The increase in income tax for the high earners has blown away the Tony Blair years during which the middle classes became a friend of the new Labour Party. Gordon Brown appears to have felt uncomfortable in the guise of new Labour and appears to have reverted back to his traditional roots to reposition his party.
Many political and economic analysts suggest that this will leave a serious void in the centre ground of the UK voting public, one which the Tory party will look to fill as quickly as possible. This bodes well for a very interesting and volatile general election which is likely to be held in 2010. Gordon Brown has put the reputation of the Labour Party back on the line with this weeks pre-budget report with many observers reflecting on the similarities with the 1970s when Labour took the UK into serious financial trouble.
While Gordon Brown has enjoyed a brief increase in his ratings over the last few weeks, the honeymoon period when he first took on the role of PM is most definitely over.
