Are the economic woes of the UK pushing more people to move overseas?
Despite a number of denials by the UK government it appears that the country has been one of the worst hit by the worldwide economic slowdown and apparently one of the worst prepared for such an event. There is a growing concern that more and more UK business people and the general population are looking to move overseas to escape ever increasing taxes and an ever-increasing cost of living.
Even though the likes of Spain and Portugal, common destinations for UK expats, are struggling there has been increased interest in the areas from UK residents. In the short-term many may well have to put their plans on ice until the property market returns to life and they are able to raise funds to start their new lives. Many property investors looking overseas will however have seen the substantial fall in the exchange rate of sterling against many of the major countries of the world - something which will see overseas property prices increase substantially in sterling terms.
Quite what the government can do to try and reduce the numbers looking overseas in the short term remains to be seen with the economy bumping along and unemployment on the increase.
