Can the Scottish economy survive?

Despite the constant battles and constant rows between the Scottish parliament and the UK government there has been a call for calm and communication as the Scottish economy enters its darkest period for many years. A recent survey has shown the economy has turned down sharply over the last few months and has never been as depressed as it is today for over 25 years. The Scottish National party, who hold a minority government position in the Scottish parliament, have been at constant loggerheads with the UK authorities regarding funding, taxes and control of Scottish finances.

Despite all the talk of Scotland going independent and the subsequent rhetoric coming out of the Scottish National Party offices there is no doubt that the Scottish economy needs a UK government now more than ever before. The constant criticism of the UK Treasury has created something of a barrier between the two entities but one which needs to be taken down as soon as possible.

There have been a number of tax changes suggested for Scotland which include a local income tax system to replace the council tax. This has attracted severe criticism both north and south of the border with suggestions of a potentially massive funding deficit which the Scottish government expect the UK authorities to cover. MPs both north and south of the border need to work together on a significant rescue plan before the Scottish economy moves into freefall.
