Do the G20 meetings actually make a difference?

As we approach the G20 meeting in London there is a varying opinion as to whether these summits actually work and ultimately what they gain. In the current economic environment while in public everybody pulls together there is very much an "us and them" mentality behind closed doors with each and every European and worldwide government looking to solve its own problems first.

What we have seen since the introduction of the G20 is significant "hot air" on a number of subjects and ultimately very little action. As we at the weekend, the G20 members are still rehashing and re-issuing statements from the last meeting although nobody is fooled into thinking significant action has been taken. Anyone who thinks governments around the world wait until the meeting of the G20 before taking action on their own economy are very mistaken and there are concerns as to where future funding will come from to assist other economies around the world.

Many people believe that the G20 is effectively a PR machine which is rolled out on a regular basis as and when required and ultimately there are no real changes within the timescales suggested.
