TK Maxx Fraud Case Hits The US Courts
News that 11 people have been charged in connection with the loss of 45 million customer bank account and credit card details from TK Maxx in March 2007 has received a warm welcome from consumers across the UK. The case was part of a major fraud bust which saw US authorities drag 11 alleged offenders to court.
TK Maxx was just part of the overall scheme which included theft from the likes of BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble and Sports Authority to name but a few. The US authorities managed to apprehend three people from the US, three from the Ukraine, two from China, one from Estonia and one from Belarus in a global sting.
While much of the detail was with held form the press at the time of the frauds it has now been revealed that the mass of account details were stored on a server and sold on to people around the globe. Massive amounts of money were taken from cash machines as the sting gathered pace, but the authorities were very quickly onto the case.
Even though there was much criticism of system security at the time there can be nothing but praise for the US authorities who were very quickly into action.
