Cabinet ministers embarrassed by expense leaks

As the Labour government appears to be lurching from one disaster to another there have been a number of damaging expenses leaks in relation to Cabinet Minister spending. It is reported that a number of senior ministers and the Prime Minister have made a variety of expense claims which while perfectly legal and within the regulations will cause outrage amongst UK voters.

Amongst the allegations is a claim that Gordon Brown claimed £6000 in cleaner expenses on his private Westminster flat over two years after paying his brother for a shared cleaner. There are also revelations that Jack Straw claimed back his entire council tax expenditure on his second home despite having a 50% discount. However, it has since emerged that Jack Straw spotted the error himself and has made good the difference between the cost and his expenses claim. However, these are just the tip of the iceberg as yet again MPs across the board, and in particular government ministers, ready themselves for a significant backlash from UK voters.

Despite many attempts by Gordon Brown to silence the debate on MPs expenses there appears to be no letup in the pressure and press coverage afforded to this particular area of parliamentary life.
