Alistair Darling under pressure over expenses
Alistair Darling today faces claims that he submitted an invoice for service charges on his south London flat which he had rented out to tenants. The accusation of the claim for expenses on his flat while also taking living allowances on his grace and favour home in Downing Street is a bitter blow for the Chancellor. While he has vehemently denied all claims he appears to be one of the main targets with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and his Treasury spokesman Vince Cable launching a very personal attacks on the Chancellor.
There are also claims that many in the Labour Party would prefer to see Alistair Darling out of a job and he may well be the victim of a smear campaign which appears to be growing arms and legs. This is just the latest in a long list of revelations against Cabinet ministers and leading opposition party MPs who have fallen victim to the well organised and orchestrated Daily Telegraph campaign. While Alistair Darling would be by far and away the highest profile casualty if you were to leave office, there are fears within Parliament that more damning news and damning details about expenses for other MPs will follow.
