UK motorists more interested in cost-cutting than the economy
Coming during the week that the UK government launched a massive renewable energy campaign a report by the RAC has confirmed what many people suspected, that UK motorists are more interested in looking after their own costs than saving the environment, traffic management or road improvements. While some environmentally friendly groups may be disappointed with this discovery, the fact is that UK motorists already pay significant tax income to the Treasury through their road tax and tax on petrol, with more and more feeling they are an easy target for the authorities.
Interestingly, just under 50% of motorists in the UK have actually begun to cut down on their short distance car journeys with 53% confirming that they are starting to walk to their destinations where possible. Around 25% of motorists are also starting to use public transport more frequently although a significant 67% would swap their cars for public transport for many journeys if services were better. However, when you consider the demise of the National Express rail franchise, the short-term future of the UK transport sector is anything upbeat.
The cost of motoring in the UK has risen substantially over the last decade and many people are now starting to consider alternatives for the future.
