Aldi announces reorganisation of UK division
Aldi, the discount supermarket retailer operating in the UK, has today announced the departure of the managing director of the UK and Irish division. Paul Foley is being replaced by the former managing director of the Austrian division as growth numbers in the UK start to slow. This has come as something of a surprise to many in the industry because the likes of Aldi and Lidl have made significant inroads into the market share of the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons as many shoppers downgrade due to financial issues.
However, the latest growth figures from the supermarket industry show that both Aldi and Lidl are starting to fall behind the likes of Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. Much of the reverse in growth numbers has come about due to a sustained attack on discount retailers from the likes of Tesco who spotted this particular threat at a very early stage. Describing itself as "Britain's biggest discounter" Tesco took away much of the shine from the Aldi situation and appears to have firmed up customer numbers over the last few weeks.
While recent growth has slowed somewhat in the discount supermarket sector, the main players in the industry would be foolish to write off the likes of Aldi and Lidl at this particular juncture.
