90% of Brits feel ripped off by energy companies

Nearly nine out of ten Britons feel they are paying too much in utility bills, a new study has shown. According to a poll conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Sunday Times, 89 per cent of respondents said they feel they are being ripped off for their gas and electricity. Meanwhile, just four per cent of those polled said they thought they were getting a good deal. The findings come as npower this week announced it is increasing its bills by 15 per cent, with many of its rival energy providers to follow suit in the next couple of weeks. Allan Asher, chief executive of Energywatch, which represents the interests of gas and electricity consumers, said that the finding indicates that competition between providers has thus far failed to result in a better deal for the customer. He commented: "British householders are a captive market. The energy companies should be fighting for market share, fighting for customers and fighting to offer the best value they can. But what they do is behave and price in almost exactly the same way."
