Is British Gas Blowing Hot Air?

While there has been much speculation of late about further increases in the cost of household energy bills, it seems as though British Gas may be the first to test the markets resolve. British Gas parent, Centrica, has announced the company will do whatever is required to retain profit margins in the company’s retail business. This has been widely seen as a threat to increase prices as we approach the critical winter period.

As the price of gas and electricity continues to move substantially higher there are concerns that the regulator is not doing enough to help the general consumer. Many experts in the market are a little perplexed at the rate at which gas prices have increased even though they are not as closely linked to the price of oil as many would think.

British Gas will not be the last energy company to increase prices, with a stepping stone affect expected over the coming weeks and months. Each of the major players in the market seems set to take the lead at some stage and spread the natural backlash from the public. Calls for the UK government to become more involved in the situation have been greeted with a deadly silence.
