Councils spend more on compensation than fixing our roads!

It has been revealed that councils throughout the UK are paying out more in compensation to drivers than they are fixing the roads of the UK. Last year councils throughout the UK spent £52.3 million repairing holes in the road while at the same time paying out £53 million in compensation to drivers alleged to have suffered damage to their vehicles because of the state of roads in the UK. Is this madness?

The average pothole costs £56 to repair which works equates to 966,429 pothole repairs for the £53 million which was paid out in compensation, not to mention the 40,000 working days which council staff spent processing these claims.

While the authorities suggest that many of these claims are spurious and the no win no fee sector is behind the increase it beggars belief that the situation has been allowed to reach such gigantic proportions. Surely a one time investment to speed up the repair program for the UK's roads would make sense on both safety and financial grounds and stop the ever increasing number of claims coming through.

At a time when each and every person in the UK is feeling the pinch we need as much of our taxes to be spent on us than ever before.
