Jon Moulton to leave Alchemy Partners
Private equity pioneer Jon Moulton has today announced that he will be leaving Alchemy Partners, the buyout company he set up more than 10 years ago, after an apparent disagreement regarding future strategy. He had originally been expected to retire in October 2010 but this has now been brought forward and the relevant parties are now in discussions regarding a financial payoff.
Moulton is perhaps best known for his part in the takeover of MG Rover and the controversy this created and continues to attract to this very day. While often seen as a pioneer of the private equity industry he has also been very critical of his peers, which has left him somewhat in the lurch with regards to support. However, in the recent Sunday Times Rich List he was quoted as having assets totalling £135 million so he will not exactly be out on the streets!
While the details of the fallout have yet to be revealed in full there is no doubt that the private equity sector is under enormous pressure from the UK government, EU authorities and various regulators. The sector, along with the UK banking sector, has been blamed for the ongoing financial demise of the European markets - it is by all accounts one of the most cutthroat industries in the world!
