Gordon Brown hangs BAE Systems out to dry

It has been revealed that Gordon Brown has given the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) the go-ahead to prosecute BAE Systems regarding an alleged bribery scandal involving parties in the Middle East. At a time of great sensitivity with regards to companies and individuals being held to account, it seems that the government is looking to curry favour with UK voters despite the fact that a previous attempt to prosecute the company was apparently held up by overseas government intervention.

Quite what has changed with regards to the earlier investigation into the BAE systems bribery scandal is unclear but what is clear is that the SFO has the company in its sights and nothing will stop them taking the company to court.

The allegations relate to overseas contracts which BAE Systems won amid suggestions that the company paid "millions of pounds" in bribes to win various agreements. The company itself has never commented officially on the investigation or the allegations but if the SFO is successful in taking the company to court we are likely to hear more details of the alleged irregularities.

However, there is a feeling in political circles that the SFO and BAE Systems will come to some kind of agreement to keep the issue out of court and out of the public domain.
