British Airways Agrees Tie-up With American Airlines And Iberia
In a move which has already proved controversial British Airways has today announced a deal with American Airlines and Iberia which will see the airlines work more closely together in the future on flight data, ticketing information and airline seats. As you might have guessed the move has prompted an uncompromising response from Virgin Airlines.
Virgin has been on the war path for a few weeks now and made its views clear on more than one occasion. Richard Branson's group has been at loggerheads with British Airways for many years now and the recent fuel surcharge saga which saw Virgin affectively turn Queen's evidence in exchange for immunity from prosecution did not help the relationship.
It will be very interesting to see what the US and UK authorities make of this latest move which still has to go through something of a drawn out regulatory approval process. A similar move was rejected a few years ago but with the current state of the airline industry there are hopes that it will be waived though this time.
This latest agreement, coming on the back of the Iberia / British Airways merger announcement, is sure to see more companies in talks about merging and working more closely together.
