IMF highlights UK pension and healthcare systems as concerns
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has this evening highlighted the UK pension and healthcare systems as potential concerns for the future. The IMF believes that these two issues need to be resolved as soon as possible to pave the way for a recovery in UK finances at a time when other countries appear to be in recovery mode, while the UK is consolidating at best.
It is no secret that the pension system in the UK is literally on the verge of collapse with more and more final salary pension schemes closing on a regular basis and pension fund deficits nearing £200 billion. Against this background, the NHS is also under serious pressure and has become something of a haven for overseas visitors who are attracted by the "free health care for all" philosophy behind the original NHS ideal.
However, the pension fund industry is a problem which will not be resolved overnight and funding issues with regards to the NHS will also need long-term care and attention. As a consequence, the IMF continues to roll out a number of issues with regards to the UK economy which are indirectly criticising the Labour government at a time when encouragement would probably be more appreciated.
