The land rush around Heathrow airport
Despite the UK property sector being under significant pressure over the last 12 months there has been a rush to invest in land which may be acquired by the owners of Heathrow airport if they are allowed to introduce a third runway. Many protesters and ecologists have been very proactive in their fight against a third runway which they believe will cause yet more harm to the environment, not to mention the local wildlife.
The rush for land around the area earmarked for the third runway was prompted by Greenpeace which plans to split up and repackage its property investment into smaller areas and sell to supporters around the world. The supporters could be situated from anywhere between the North Pole and the South Pole in a move purely designed to delay the possible compulsory purchase orders required to take the land back for the runway - if the go-ahead is given.
This move to try and push through a third runway at Heathrow airport further demonstrates the government's apparent willingness to overlook the damage which airlines do to the environment with regards to emissions. This comes at a time when UK consumers have been hit with changes to their everyday shopping habits with traditional lightbulbs banned and suggestions that even plasma TVs are on the radar of the EU.
