UK gas supply back in the headlines

Despite the fact that UK gas supplies have been in the headlines for some days it looks as though this week will see the barrage of criticism targeted at the UK government continue. Many people are now looking to the future with regards to UK gas supplies, with only eight days backup storage available in the UK, and many are highlighting the fact that government has given the go-ahead for a large increase in the number of gas fired power stations in the future. So where does this leave the UK gas supply of tomorrow?

It is certainly becoming a big concern to businesses and consumers around the UK with the country more dependent on imported gas than ever before. A short-term blip in the supply of gas from Norway last week saw a large spike in the price of gas in the wholesale markets and indeed led to some companies having their gas supplies cut off for a short time.

The problem for the UK government is the fact that gas storage systems cannot be erected overnight and this is a long-term strategy which would appear to have been overlooked. There is growing concern that the UK gas supply market could be held to ransom by overseas companies who are becoming more aware of the U.K.'s dependence upon foreign controlled suppliers and foreign controlled companies.
