Holiday companies reduce places available but increase costs
It has been revealed that the UK holiday sector is looking to reduce the number of holiday places available over the next year while at the same time pushing prices higher. Figures from the industry indicate that this year will see around 1 million fewer holiday places available compared to 2 years ago, as the recession continues to bite. This comes despite the fact that many people in the UK are still adamant they will take their annual leave overseas - at whatever price!
This reduction in holiday numbers and increase in the cost of a holiday could not have come at a worse time with the UK currency under pressure across the board. As a consequence, services and goods are more expensive in the majority of popular UK overseas tourist destinations.
It is no secret that holiday numbers in the UK have yet to recover from the recession and indeed a number of holiday companies have seen their finances pushed to the limit. The short-term reduction in the number of holiday places available will actually enable many holiday companies to survive these difficult trading conditions, although it will see the cost of a £2000 family holiday increase by around £180. However, this is unlikely to stop the vast majority of UK families from taking their eagerly awaited annual leave overseas!
