Could Scotland be the renewable energy centre of the world?
A report on behalf of the Scottish government has shed new light on the country's ability to become a major force in the renewable energy market. It is believed that within 40 years the country could be producing enough power to fulfil Scottish demand seven times over, leaving the potential for significant profits by selling excess energy into the national grid. So how will this happen?
There would need to be a massive increase in the number of wind, wave and tidal energy devices across Scotland culminating in 18 times more than we have at present. These proposed 20,000 units could potentially generate £14 billion in profit from electricity sales by 2050 and provide upwards of 60,000 jobs across Scotland. It is believed that the Scottish government will use this report, and the figures within, to strengthen the country's case for additional funding from the UK Treasury and the European Union.
However, the investment required to reach this target would be around £4 billion a year, a massive increase on the current investment budget. It will be interesting to see how the UK authorities react to this report as the previous Labour government appeared to be very keen on renewable energy such as that readily available across large areas of Scotland.

No pay no water supply in the future!
Thames Water has today opened something of a hornets nest with a radical new plan forwarded to the water regulator. If the company is given the go-ahead, it will see powers invested in UK water companies which would allow them to reduce water supplies to homes which are persistent non-payers of their bills. This completely goes against all UK regulations and laws which ensure that water is supplie...
