British Airways in deal to produce fuel from waste material
British Airways has announced a venture with American biofuel specialist Solena which will see the creation of a plant in the UK which will recycle 500,000 tonnes of waste material into 16,000,000 gallons of fuel which the company will use in its aircraft. Work on the plant will begin over the next two years, once planning consent has been granted, and is expected to create upwards of 1,200 jobs.
This is the first major move by British Airways into the recycling market and should no doubt attract significant tax breaks from the UK government. The 16,000,000 gallons of fuel which would be created will be twice that currently used by all British Airways aircraft flying to and from the city of London airport. So far the UK government has made no direct comment regarding the proposed recycling plant but there is no doubt this is a major breakthrough for the "green" movement in the UK.
For many years, airlines in the UK and around the world have been the subject of much criticism with regards to their environmental records. This move by British Airways is likely to be replicated across the board and should result in a reduced tax liability around the world.
