Toyota to close UK factory for two weeks

Toyota, currently at the centre of safety issues regarding various vehicles, has announced plans to shut its UK production plant for two weeks next month. This will leave 3,500 workers with time on their hands after the recall of over 8 million vehicles worldwide due to various alleged defects. While the company is trying to play down the two-week closure in the UK it is known that car sales for Toyota have collapsed worldwide due to the string of negative headlines in the media.

This comes at a time when Toyota sales had already fallen by 12.5% in the UK, prior to the recent recall of vehicles, despite the fact that the industry had been buoyed by the government's car scrappage scheme. It will be interesting to see short-term sales figures for Toyota as the company is under severe pressure from various consumer groups and governments around the world with suggestions that further recalls could be announced in the short term.

This has been a disaster for not only Toyota but the car industry as a whole and casts a very dark cloud over a sector which had been showing signs of life. Quite how the medium to long term future will pan out for Toyota remains to be seen but it will take some time to regain the trust of consumers around the globe.
