Non-domicile party supporters active in UK politics
As the fury surrounding Lord Ashcroft's revelation that he is a non-domicile continues to grow, it has also been revealed that the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrat party have all accepted political donations from non-domiciles. This revelation would appear to scupper Lord Mandelson's involvement in the situation with the announcement that he has asked the House of Lords to reconsider Lord Ashcroft's position.
While there are changes in the pipeline regarding non-domiciles and their involvement in politics and political donations, something agreed by all parties, it is perhaps the decade is taken for Lord Ashcroft to reveal his tax status which has caused such damaging headlines for the Tory party. There is no doubt that over the next few days we will see a constant flurry of information regarding his finances although we are also certain to see evidence of non-domiciles involved with the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrat party.
Many people will be unsure as to why there has been such a backlash against the likes of Lord Ashcroft when ultimately UK tax regulations allow this situation. The peer's UK tax affairs are in order and the only difference is he does not pay UK tax on his overseas earnings.
