BBC worldwide announces record profits
BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, yesterday announced profits of £145.2 million on turnover of £1.07 billion. This is a 36.5% increase on the previous year and when you consider this performance against the economic background both in the UK and around the world it is very strong to say the least.
While there is some criticism that the BBC, a taxpayer funded venture, has a strong position in the commercial market, the company, BBC worldwide, is said to have paid out in excess of £1 billion to the BBC, production companies, writers and actors since 2004. This in itself is a massive income stream for a number of different parties and when you consider that the content is beamed to more than 300 million homes in excess of 100 countries around the world then you begin to get an understanding of the size and strength of the operation.
This came on the same day that the BBC was forced to announce sweeping cuts in its budget after an ongoing review of the corporation. There have been many accusations with regards to salaries, bonuses and expenditure within the BBC and indeed there is talk that the taxpayer subsidy could be reduced, replaced or removed in the future.
