What has happened to Alistair Darling?
As the general election comes to a head, one face which has been missing from the TV and election trail is that of the Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling. If you cast your mind back to the time when Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer and Tony Blair was the Prime Minister, they were literally joined at the hip. So where is Alistair Darling?
While the Chancellor's name has been mentioned in passing in numerous press releases and media interviews he has been very much behind the scenes over the last few weeks. It is believed that Alistair Darling has already made plans to move out of his current home on Downing Street with removal vans seen leaving the premises some days ago. It is an open secret that the relationship between Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling has literally crumbled over the last months and they are said to be barely on speaking terms.
Many people believe that Alistair Darling is something of a wounded animal having taken a serious onslaught from the Labour hierarchy over the last few months, with the likes of Lord Mandelson said to have treated the Chancellor with disrespect. As a consequence, what can Alistair Darling bring to the party?
