Recruitment firm negative on public-sector workers

Recruitment firm Ambition has certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons with a comment today that public-sector workers from the areas of accountancy and finance may not be welcome in the private sector. Rather controversially, the company believes that those in the public sector "lack the cut and thrust attitude" demanded by private sector businesses. But is this really the case?

While the opinion of many is that those in the public sector have been shielded from the cut and thrust of the private sector for many years, both with their remuneration packages and pensions, this is maybe a little wide of the mark. Many years ago, when the unions were more powerful and strike activity was more commonplace, there may have been an argument for a differential between the public and private sector but in many ways this has reduced significantly in recent years.

Many people in the public sector have at some time worked in the private sector and vice versa so this sweeping comment by Ambition is a little unfair to say the least. However, it does look as though those 16,500 accountants and finance staff expected to lose their jobs in the public sector may have a tough time finding similar employment positions in the private sector.
