CBI joins fight in favour of immigration

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has this week joined the fight against the cap on immigration from those working in the UK from non-EU countries. This has been an ongoing issue for the UK government and is one which needs to be handled with kid gloves. So what impact would an immigration cap have on the UK business arena?

The early signs are that many businesses in the UK have until now depended upon skilled overseas workers to fill many gaps in the market place. However, the UK government is poised to reduce the number of people working in the UK from overseas which could hit a number of sectors very hard and very quickly. If UK businesses are unable to fill important roles within their operations then effectively they are unlikely to grow in the short to medium term which will impact upon the UK economy.

It seems that the Labour government went in one particular direction with regards to immigration and the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition is poised to move in another direction. As a consequence, UK business leaders are literally stuck in the middle unaware of what to expect in the short to medium term and unable to make plans for the future. It is difficult to see a short-term resolution to this problem.
